It’s time to celebrate the animated moving image! In 2002, October 28th, ASIFA proclaimed International Animation Day as the primary global event to celebrate the art of animation. Fun Fact: this commemorates the first public animation performances of Émile Reynaud’s Theatre Optique at the Grévin Museum in Paris in 1892, the first presentation of projected moving images to an audience, predating even Auguste and Louis Lumière by three years!

We love animation, and we think you do too! Check out the following from Film School Shorts, plus a special presentation by our friends at KQED’s Truly CA!

Little Favour

Like poetry in motion, a single leaf morphs from clay to pencil to paper as it blows through a series of imaginative worlds.

Dia de los Muertos

Bring tissues! This Student Academy Award winner touchingly teaches the true meaning of the day.

Steadfast Stanley

Zombies and corgis? Was filmmaker John Cody Kim trying to break the internet!?

Will

In this Student Academy Award winner and set during the 9/11 attacks, the question is asked: what if you could turn back time?

Owl and Mouse

What a hoot! What happens when your guest is also your dinner?

And a bonus film by our friends at Truly CA!

Last Day of Freedom

Heartbreaking and beautifully hand-drawn, this examination of the effects of combat and undiagnosed mental illness is also a stark take on the capital punishment system. Just shortlisted for the Academy Awards in the Documentary Short Subject category.
